Joseph D. Greenwell was appointed as the new UC Berkeley associate vice chancellor and dean of students Wednesday evening, following Jonathan Poullard’s resignation from the post last September. His appointment was announced by Harry Le Grande, campus vice chancellor for student affairs.

Currently the dean of students at San Francisco State University, Greenwell has worked considerably with student groups, collaborating with departments on policy and operations on issues including student hospitalizations, injuries and deaths.

Prior to SFSU, Joseph held various positions relating to student affairs at Stanford University, Colgate University and Vanderbilt University. At his current post, Greenwell also oversees Greek programs, residential life, student conduct and crisis management.

As dean of students at UC Berkeley, Greenwell will oversee student groups and activities as well as emergency and crisis situations relating to students. He will also assume responsibility of the ASUC Auxiliary, student legal services and the Career Center, among several other areas.

Greenwell was chosen by a search committee composed of 11 students including ASUC President DeeJay Pepito, faculty and staff representatives. The committee was chaired by Anne De Luca, associate vice chancellor for admissions and enrollment.

David Surratt will continue serving as interim dean until Greenwell takes office on May 1.
