Registered sex offender allegedly molests girl on Southside

A registered sex offender was arrested on suspicion of annoying and molesting a child on the south side of campus Saturday evening.

Lew Olive, 55, allegedly approached a girl by Barrow Lane and began talking to her. The girl and her family, with whom she was walking, tried to cross Bancroft Way to get away from him. Olive, however, grabbed the child and her father to separate them, lifting the girl two to three feet off of the ground, police said.

UCPD officers who were nearby saw the altercation and told Olive to release the girl, police said. Olive tried to resist arrest but was restrained by police officers and taken into custody, police said. The girl was uninjured during the incident.

The Alameda County district attorney charged Olive in connection with the incident.

Olive, whose bail was set at $105,000, has had prior arrests and is a registered sex offender under Megan’s Law. His plea hearing was scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday at Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.
