A one-alarm fire Tuesday afternoon destroyed the residence of a man who had been living in a shipping container on Virginia Street, with no injuries reported.
Berkeley Fire Department was dispatched to a fire on the 600 block of Virginia at 3:42 p.m., according to BFD Chief Gil Dong. Upon arrival, they found a shipping container that had been illegally converted into a living space, Dong said. The fire was put out within about five minutes, and no cause has been determined, although an investigator was at the scene as of around 5 p.m.
According to BFD Battalion Chief Bill Kehoe, who was at the scene, the fire burned through the shipping container after starting on nearby grass. None of the surrounding property, including a cement plant and electrical box, were damaged.
