Big rig catches fire on I-80 Friday afternoon, later contained

Authorities responded to a report of a big rig that caught fire on Interstate 80 between Gilman Street and University Avenue, which was fully contained by 1:30 p.m.

The event was reported to the California Highway Patrol Golden Gate Division at about 12:45 p.m. According to CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld, the trailer of the big rig had caught fire. As the driver headed down the highway, people alerted the driver that the trailer was on fire. The driver then pulled over to the shoulder of the highway. The trailer was empty.

Berkeley and Albany fire departments were called to the scene and were able to contain the fire. There were no injuries reported.

Wilkenfeld said lanes 1, 2 and 3 are open, with the remaining three lanes closed. The Gilman off ramp is also closed.

He said he expects traffic to be heavily backed up and that it will take at least an hour before all lanes are opened again.
