BPD requests help identifying suspect in strong-arm robbery

The Berkeley Police Department has requested assistance from the community in identifying a male suspect for a strong-arm robbery that took place Thursday.

According to a release sent out by BPD, the victim, an 83-year-old male, was walking with a family member on Fourth Street near Hearst Avenue about 1:08 p.m. and had recently purchased an iPhone at the Apple Store.

The man allegedly followed the victim before taking the new phone from him. The victim was injured in the process, the release said.

According to the BPD Nixle alert, the man, who was caught on video, allegedly fled the area in a silver Audi with paper plates. He is described as a black male in his 30s with short hair and average build, wearing a red zip-up Gap hooded sweatshirt and light blue jeans.

BPD has released photographs and video to the public and asked that anyone with information about the incident or the suspect should contact the robbery detail at 510-981-5742 or the BPD nonemergency line at 510-981-5900.
