Update 1/26/2017: This article has been updated to reflect additional information from the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau.
Berkeley police and firefighters discovered a dead body in North Berkeley on Sunday morning after receiving a call for medical help, as first reported by Berkeleyside.
Berkeley Police Department received the medical call about 9:00 a.m., but when it arrived at the scene, the male victim — identified by the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau as Daniel Messer, 40 — was already dead, according to Lt. Andrew Rateaver. The victim was found outside a residence at 2044 Hearst Ave. in the neighborhood commonly referred to as the Gourmet Ghetto.
Despite speculation from the community that the victim may be homeless, the coroner’s bureau could not confirm whether or not the victim had a residence, nor have they determined the victim’s cause of death.
