Guacamole 61, a Mexican restaurant in the Gourmet Ghetto, secured a permit Thursday to open an additional location near the Berkeley campus.

The restaurant, currently located at 1511 Shattuck Ave., across from Cheeseboard Pizza, will open a second location closer to the Berkeley campus. Willy Perez, one of the owners of Guacamole 61, launched the restaurant to incorporate the Mexican street food that he grew up eating in his Berkeley household into a restaurant environment.

“I love Mexican food, so we decided to come up with a concept that’s leaning toward the younger generation,” Perez said. “The name is based on my 61 Chevy Impala that I had since I was 15, and the car is painted guacamole green.”

Guacamole 61 features a menu including options such as burritos, nachos, enchiladas and quesadillas. The prices at the restaurant range from $11 to $30.

The new restaurant will be located on 2142 Center St., replacing Alborz, a Persian and Iranian restaurant. The new Guacamole 61 will be an adaptation of the current restaurant, but it will be catered to a younger crowd.

“It is going to have music, sports, a complete bar and the menu itself is going to expand compared to the original one to include street foods as well,” Perez said.

The campus area already has a variety of Mexican fast food options, including La Burrita and Taco Bell, which opened this January.

Campus freshman Nicole Mendoza said she believes that Mexican fast food restaurants are becoming increasingly popular.

“Mexican food is both convenient and affordable,” Mendoza said. “I think in the rush of work during the weekdays, most students opt for such food options, so it is not surprising that more chains want to capitalize on that.”
