Berkeley Police Department released a Nixle alert early Tuesday morning informing community members that it had located a missing person at-risk.

BPD sent out a Nixle alert Monday morning, asking the community for its assistance in locating Koichi Kawakami — an 82-year-old Asian man who suffers from dementia and memory loss. In the Tuesday Nixle alert, BPD announced that Kawakami had been found.

According to the alert, BPD received a call from Kawakami’s family about 4:53 p.m Monday informing the department that Kawakami had been returned unharmed. Prior to this, Kawakami had last been seen Sunday about 2:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Ward Street in Berkeley.

Kawakami also previously went missing in August but was quickly located later that day.

“The family and the department are grateful for the efforts of the good sammaritan who helped (Kawakami) find his way home,” the alert said.
