UC Berkeley administrators propose rescheduling of Ann Coulter event to September

UC Berkeley administrators have proposed rescheduling Ann Coulter’s campus appearance for September, citing safety concerns.

Coulter was originally scheduled to deliver a talk on immigration April 27 after Berkeley College Republicans and BridgeUSA, formerly known as BridgeCal, invited her to speak on campus in March. But in an email sent to BCR on Tuesday night, campus Vice Chancellors Scott Biddy and Stephen Sutton said UCPD and the Division of Student Affairs could not find a safe and suitable location for the event.

“We regret this outcome — especially given our unqualified support for our students’ right to bring speakers of their choosing to the University, and our deep commitment to the values and principles embedded in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,” the email stated.

UCPD had learned that certain groups responsible for the violence that played out at the Milo Yiannopoulos event in February and the Free Speech Rally in Berkeley on Saturday planned to make an appearance at the upcoming Coulter talk, according to an email from UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof.

“UCPD’s concerns and recommendations were significantly influenced by escalating violence during demonstration-related events on the campus and surrounding areas of the City,” Mogulof said in the email.

In their email, Biddy and Sutton said the campus had first learned of Coulter’s appearance on campus “through the newspapers.” They requested that before student groups commit to hosting events on a specific date, they collaborate with the campus to find appropriate venues.

Biddy and Sutton said in the email that UCPD and the Division of Student Affairs remain “firmly committed” to helping BCR set up an alternative time and date for the Coulter event, recommending Mondays and Tuesdays in September as options. They added that the campus would require at least four weeks’ notice to successfully identify a venue, time of day and security arrangements.

“It’s unfortunate that the university learned about the Coulter event from reading about in the newspaper,” Mogulof said. “Advance planning and advance notice are key to holding events that are safe and are successful.”

Despite the campus’s postponement, Ann Coulter told the Hollywood Reporter that she will still be holding her event on the campus April 27. She tweeted the Hollywood Reporter’s article calling it the “real story,” while alleging that the San Francisco Chronicle was “fake news” on a tweet linking to a CBS Local story about the event’s postponement.

Spencer Brown, a spokesperson for Young America’s Foundation — a conservative organization that is helping fund the event — said the event was “essentially cancelled,” but that the event will happen on campus “whether Berkeley likes it or not.”

“We are currently moving ahead with plans and pursuing all remedies of the cancellation of Ms. Coulter’s speech,” Brown said.

Members of BCR and BridgeUSA plan to meet with campus administrators Wednesday at 2 p.m. to discuss the Coulter event moving forward, according to BCR Internal Vice President Pieter Sittler.

BCR spokesperson Naweed Tahmas alleged that the campus had enacted a 3 p.m. curfew on BCR’s events without their knowledge, saying in an email that “liberal speakers have the privilege of speaking in the evening, while conservative speakers must speak only before 3 P.M.”

Mogulof, however, called this allegation “categorically false,” saying that the curfew applies to any event that has been shown to likely incite violent protests, regardless of political affiliation or content of the event.

Cal Berkeley Democrats Vice President of Membership Caiden Nason said he is concerned the campus’s postponement of the event may lead to more political division and violence in the community.

“I am worried that we are going to see more presence of (neo-Nazis and white supremacists in Berkeley) since people will be assuming it’s a banning of a free speech rather than an act in supporting safety of students,” Nason said.

Pranav Jandhyala, BridgeUSA founder and co-president, said although his organization and BCR are still advocating that the event take place April 27, the potential postponement is “disappointing from a nonpartisan perspective.”

“The whole job of a university is to promote diversity of opinions,” Jandhyala said. “If an event is going to be canceled because the content of someone’s speech is too inflammatory, that’s disappointing to me and to my organization.”

Whatever the real and legitimate logistical concerns about security and safety regarding Coulter (or anyone with similar opinions) speak at UC Berkeley may be, I STILL think it is a mistake to cancel her proposed presentation. My sympathies are generally with the leftists and progressives, and I despise just about everything this Ann Coulter will have to say. Nevertheless, I still believe the central principle of free speech for all MUST be the determining factor. The principle of free speech presupposes that ALL viewpoints be given a fair hearing – most especially the ones that are unpopular with at least some segment of the population.

Many of my colleagues on the left seem to be acting as if they don’t believe (or don’t even understand?) this core principle. They act as if they are AFRAID of what Ann Coulter has to say, as if somehow her words and her arguments will be so compelling and so persuasive that letting her speak is going to somehow “convert” some significant portion of the local Berkeley population to her way of thinking (a rather dubious prospect at best).

This whole approach that seems to be currently in vogue with much of the “the left” these days of trying to deal with ideas we don’t like by suppressing them seems like a wrong-headed and ultimately counterproductive effort. It is more consistent with the traditional policies of fascist regimes, puritan ethics, the “religious right,” and totalitarian governments that insist they have the right, indeed the responsibility, to “protect” their subjects from “dangerous” or “subversive” ideas – and thus to censor them. Leftists and “progressives” ought to be ashamed and embarrassed to be caught borrowing their tactics from the extreme right – and it is fair game for the far right to be shaming them for doing so.

So let her speak – and counter whatever lies, misrepresentations, exaggerations, or distortions you believe she is making with facts and logic – not by suppression.

    • FreedomFan

Leftists can’t win arguments so that’s why they must forcibly censor the opposition and smear them as “racist” and “fascist”.

For example, all the Democrat Senators voted to cripple the 1st amendment in December 2015.

But anyway looks like the chancellor grew a pair and decided to “allow” Ann to come–especially since he couldn’t stop her and didn’t want Trump to cut off his funding.

      Yo Dave Doleshal…

WHETHER OR NOT ANYONE IS “AFRAID” OF WHAT ANN COULTER HAS TO SAY…:

THERE ARE OFFICIAL UNIVERSITY PROCEDURES — AND *STANDARDS* — FOR ANY CAMPUS CLUB INVITING SUCH A PERSON TO HOLD A PUBLIC EVENT ON CAMPUS.

      PERIOD.

      .

      • Dave Doleshal

One this point I agree with you. The same rules and procedures should apply to everyone – left, right, or otherwise.

    • Left Unsaid

Simple speech is considered comparable to physical violence by the left. Thats why they have lost all credibility.

Sadly, the regressive left’s desperate eagerness to engage in fascist violence and thereby cede the moral high ground is why Trump is now our president.

      • Dave Doleshal

Unfortunately, what you say is correct here. By engaging in violence – and advocating censorship, this bunch is effectively discredited themselves, their supporters, and the causes they claim to be in favor of.

  • Andrew Clinton

Since Coulter’s event was cancelled by UC Berkeley officials, can the police arrest her for trespassing if she walks on campus? Also, the right of Free Speech does not include “hate speech” under California’s criminal statutes. Her statements on immigration in her books and speeches are very hateful. Can she be arrested for that? How about for “inciting a riot”? Hopefully the police will do their job and will arrest her if she comes on campus.

    • FreedomFan

Let’s prosecute everyone for “hate speech” if I get to define what that means.

There will be a lot of Leftist Commies in jail pronto.

    • SMH

      .
      In answer to Andre Clinton:

Ann Coulter could be barred/banned from giving/presenting an unauthorized public event on campus that violate university procedures for doing so — or that violate penal/civil codes or university conduct codes. She can not be arrested for any, in *general*, hateful statements about immigration in her books, unless such comments are of a specific nature violating specific penal/civil codes. And as much as I *would* be *against* any such, in general, hateful statements in her book, she should *not* be arrested (even though she couldn’t be arrested anyway) for making such statements in her own books: that *would* be her “free speech” right — unless she violated some specific penal/civil codes.

HOWEVER, IF THE _BERKELEY COLLEGE REPUBLICANS_ WENT *THROUGH* WITH HOSTING AN ANN COULTER, OR OTHER SUCH, PUBLIC EVENT ON CAMPUS ANYWAY:

THEN AS A STUDENT ORGANIZATION THE BCR COULD BE **PENALIZED** BY THE UNIVERSITY FOR DOING SO OUTSIDE OF OFFICIAL PROCEDURES FOR INVITING A HIGHLY CONTROVERSIAL / *DEMAGOGIC* SPEAKER WHO IS LIKELY TO — ESPECIALLY, *PURPOSELY* — INCITE MASS CIVIL UNREST / DISTURBANCE / VIOLENCE — AND THE BCR WOULD BE HELD *RESPONSIBLE*.

THE BCR COULD EVEN HAVE THEIR OFFICIAL STUDENT ORGANIZATION STATUS **REVOKED**.

      .

      • FreedomFan

        Here’s a clue, comrade:

A speaker isn’t “inciting mass civil unrest” when the mob is trying to censor and/or kill the speaker.

That statue is to prevent someone like Al Sharpton from stirring up an angry mob of fellow Leftists to go kill Jews, like he did in Crown Heights. However it never seems to be enforced.

    • Nina

You are profoundly mistaken about the right to free speech. Hate speech IS protected speech! If all speech was love speech, we wouldn’t need the first amendment. #facepalm

  • David DeFlyer

In general I really dislike the views of people like Coulter or Yiannopoulos, but they should be allowed to say what they want to say. At the same time the people who want to show disagreement should be allowed to do so peacefully. No side should be prevented from making an argument no matter how disgusting you feel it is.

As an alumni of UC Berkeley I would hope that the campus community could understand that freedom of speech is one of the most important freedoms that we enjoy. The freedom of speech is supposed to be so sacred in academia that we have the system of tenure to ensure professors can teach what they want without fear of retribution against their beliefs.

    • FreedomFan

Unless Cal alumni find the gonads to stop contributing in protest, the leftist censors and weasel administrators will continue to turn Cal into a national laughingstock.

      • David DeFlyer

I’ve actually never donated to the school; I’m still mad that the alumni association called me a few weeks after graduation to ask for a donation in 2009. Most people graduating that year didn’t even have a job coming out of school and were facing down a wall of debt. I was lucky that I had a job then but the insensitivity of their actions convinced me that they aren’t looking out for the best interests of the students.

        • FreedomFan

Actually it’s not just Cal. These fascists have infested almost all of higher education.

          • David DeFlyer

In reality I doubt it is really about political leaning and instead simple intolerance of views different from your own. Today’s political climate has created a hyper sensationalized vision of reality where everyone is acting poorly. I think these talks are meant to be inflammatory and so are in bad taste. From what I understand there is some basis for this. People coming from traditionally conservative areas with normal views for those regions find themselves being suppressed by the majority (ie. people treat their views as unworthy of discussion). Those people then overreact to this by getting further out of mainstream. At the same time the majority then overreacts to that overreaction and after a few cycles of amplifying effect you end up with a situation where everyone is yelling and no one is listening.

The truth that few seem to want to acknowledge is that both side have valid points. In the end we are all part of a society that has to work together to function.

A little ironic story though, my first year at Berkeley I lived in a quad at Bowles Hall, somehow I landed with three republican roommates (myself being a left leaning independent). The 2004 election made for some interesting debates!

Unfortunately your response is illustrative of what I’m trying to say. There are many valid arguments against my point of view that freedom of speech should be paramount but instead you are attacking me and not the idea (which convinces no one).

Some of the arguments that could be made against me include:
        1. The risk of injury is too high given the political situation and the University is not (should not be?) required to expend the resources necessary to support these talks on behalf of a student organization
        2. The talks are intended to be inflammatory and therefore are equivalent to shouting fire in a crowded theater
        3. That the event was not scheduled through proper means and therefore resources can’t be allocated in time (the article seems to be saying that this is a reason being used)
        4. The views being presented are so vile that they are themselves an act of violence against others

Some arguments that can also help further my point of view are
        1. Healthy discussion of all topics furthers the University’s goal of sharing ideas and knowledge
        2. Preventing this speech is a discriminatory act against people who are more likely to come from certain regions
        3. It is a historical role for higher education to facilitate rational debate about topics impacting student life
        4. Regarding #4 above, such views have sufficient acceptance around the country that they, by necessity, are a part of today’s society and therefore can’t be an act of violence

Obviously there are many more on both sides, but I hope I’ve at least added something to the larger discussion.

I saw Coulter speak at UC Irvine 3-4 years ago without any incident whatsoever. This speaks volumes about the entire Berkeley community. The result is that the heckler’s veto wins. This is what any conservative speaker can expect. The problem is that you have a feckless administration that cannot guarantee Coulter’s safety from violent protesters because they won’t let their campus police do their duty.

Enjoy the left wing echo chamber, students.

    • FreedomFan

Have you ever in your life heard of a LEFT-wing speaker being cancelled by a university chancellor for ‘safety concerns’?

I hope the Cal weasels try to stop her from speaking. It would make for an awesome lawsuit.

In Berkeley, free speech is only tolerated if it is for Progressive-Democrats. It is not tolerated for anyone else. There are no exceptions.

    If the political commissar
beta-males at the college do not approve of your speech they will send their thugs to assault you with metal pipes, baseball bats & mace.

The whole world can see the bigoted & intolerant people that run the college and the city of Berkeley.

  • John H. Gleason

Has Cal ever banned a left-wing speaker for “safety” reasons? Stop viewpoint discrimination! Cal doesn’t deserve taxpayer funding.

    • David DeFlyer

I actually believe that UC Berkeley did ban many “left wing” speakers during the free speech movement. The University was supposed to have learned its lessons from that but it appears that those lessons were lost quite quickly despite the supposed pride in those events (free speech movement cafe for example).

It is very clear that the “tolerant” & “Peace-loving” people of Berkeley want to wait until the fall for Coulter’s speech so that they can plan on bringing in their thugs from various democrat run colleges from around the country.

They want to bring in as many snowflake beta-males as they can. They want to make sure that their snowflake beta-male mob has matching black outfits with matching facemasks.
    That’s very important for the
    snowflake beta-males.

And they want to make sure that their
beta-male snowflake thugs are well armed with baseball bats, iron pipes & mace.

The political commissars of Berkeley want to make sure that their message is out there, loud and clear that dissent will not be tolerated.

Perhaps this time the Berkeley College police & the Berkeley Police Department will do their damn job and protect the public from getting assaulted. And not ignore what is going on around them.

Ann Coulter should be allowed to speak and the people who want to listen to her should be allowed to do so without the fear of being assaulted or worse.

If the UC adminstrators are too cowardly or compromised or incompetent to provide a safe environment for public speakers on their campus, why do they even have taxpayer-funded jobs in the first place?

  • freeinaz

Postpone it until September, does antifa take a vacation during September where they let you so-called administrators run your campus for a while?

  • Sissy Andrews

Interesting that administrators don’t seem to see how they are further devaluing the UC Berkeley brand. Your university is becoming a national laughingstock for its hypocrisy as the supposed “birthplace of free speech”. Future employers are going to have negative impressions when reading that an applicant has a Berkeley degree.

    • David DeFlyer

I suspect this wouldn’t actually have that much of an impact given the size and breadth of the school. For example, when I was there a decade ago the college of engineering was very non-partisan area. Most employers seem to be aware of this.

The college of letters and science on the other hand has made a point of fostering the view that it is a liberal bastion that fostered the free speech movement with all its progressive implications.

Associated Students Supports the DACA Program

DACA is crucial for students at Mt. SAC

WALNUT, Calif., March 28, 2017 — We, Associated Students of Mt. San Antonio College, supports and advocates the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program. There is a current fear that the program will be terminated, which will affect many students nationwide.

Mt. SAC will be one of the hundreds of colleges whose students will be negatively affected by the elimination of the DACA program. The program is crucial to student success as it eliminates the fear that comes with being undocumented. The elimination of this fear allows students to focus on their education while also being able to afford college expenses through being able to work.

DACA has helped many students at Mt. SAC, enabling them to become leaders and respectable scholars. Upon graduation, they continue to share their success within their community.

There are many eligibility requirements to be considered for the program: the applicant’s arrival in the United States as a child, continual residence in the country since 2007, status as a student and/or an honorably discharged veteran.

The DACA program requires an extensive background check before the acceptance of an application, which ensures that those in good moral character are of those accepted. In addition to the background check, the applicant’s age and date of entry are also considered.

The program costs, without lawyer representation fees, $465 every two years. The work permit, which last two years, must be renewed when it expires, which costs another $465.

Okay, Berkley PD and UCP cannot guarentee protection.

Time for Trump to call out the national guard and federalize them. Send 1,500 troops armed with automatic rifles, tear gas, bean ban shotguns, batons and riot sheilds onto the campus.

Take over the presidents office as the command ops center. Any member of the Berkely PD or UCP, with military service, is called back to active duty and put under command of the National guard general.

    • garyfouse

No. It’s time for California and the Feds to review the funding they give to this school. UCB is a public university, tax-payer supported, where only the left have a voice. That is not what I call an education.

No matter what your view is, you don’t want troops acting as the police. Our armed forces are trained to fight an enemy not to act as a police force. Having the armed forces act as police is to have the armed forces fighting the people as an enemy. That does not end well for anyone involved.

      • Paladin SF

Tell that to the Little Rock nine.

    Coulter requested:

    1) That the University of California chancellor request that the Oakland chief of police refrain from telling his men to stand down and ignore law-breaking by rioters attempting to shut down conservative speakers, as he has done in the past; and

    2) That UC-Berkeley announce in advance that any students engaging in violence, mayhem or heckling to prevent an invited speaker from speaking would be expelled.

As Coulter explained, “If Berkeley wants to have free speech, it can have it.”

The university’s response was to ban her speech.

    • David DeFlyer

Frankly, when it comes down to it, I would more expect that the administrators are just trying to avoid having to figure out the mess. The administrators are well aware that bad press means less donations and giving safe harbor is too often equated with tacit approval of a viewpoint. I’m sure that they are even more keenly aware of the negative impact that injury, especially if it is a vocal protestor being hurt by the police, has on public perception.
