Berkeley Police Department responded to a stabbing on the 2000 block of Center Street, in front of Berkeley City College, early Monday morning.

The stabbing was the result of an altercation between Kenneth White, a 30-year-old from El Cerrito, and the victim, a 36-year-old Berkeley resident. Whether White and the victim knew each other previously and the cause of the fight are still unknown, according to BPD spokesperson Sgt. Andrew Frankel.

The victim is now in stable condition at a nearby hospital, though their injuries were “serious” at the time of the incident, Frankel said.

A cat was recovered at the scene that is believed to belong to the victim. The cat was taken to an animal shelter for safe keeping.

The fight was over by the time police arrived to the scene. White was then detained by BPD without resistance nearby the scene, according to Frankel.

White was arrested at 12:41 a.m. Monday and booked for alleged assault with deadly weapon, not firearm, at Berkeley City Jail at 3:42 a.m., according to the Alameda County inmate locator.

White is currently being held at Berkeley City Jail on $30,000 bail.
