Will: A poem

A girl stands in a strong pose
Olivia Staser/Staff

Do not tell her she can’t

Because she will.

Do not tell her to stop because she will push harder,

Do not tell her to slow because she will run faster.

Do not tell her she should settle down and find a man,

Do not tell her to work less or care more about the bitter words from your mouth.

Because when you see this woman running you see a force of nature at work.

When you see this woman lifting she is a mountain.

And when you see her fighting she is a storm.

Do not tell this woman to calm down

because she

Will

Fight

Even

Harder.

Do not tell her to be less because she will always be more.

And when you see her fall, you will see her howl and sweat and bleed and fight.

Yes, when you see this woman broken, you will see her challenge very the cracks which form inside her heart.

And when you see her stumble, when you see her fail, when you see her stop and trip and fall again –

You will see her rise

Because you cannot tell her she can’t.

Because I tell you

I can.
