UCPD arrests suspect in connection to arson in Downtown Berkeley

UCPD arrested a female suspect on suspicion of arson Wednesday.

According to UCPD spokesperson Sgt. Sabrina Reich, UCPD checked the Banway Building at 2111 Bancroft Way about 1:41 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of a strong odor of smoke. Reich said that once officers arrived on the scene, they discovered evidence of arson that damaged the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

After an investigation, UCPD arrested Chanel Aveni, a 30-year-old female who is not affiliated with the campus, on suspicion of arson.

She is currently being held at the BPD Jail Facility, according to the Alameda County Inmate Locator. She is scheduled to be arraigned at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse on Friday.
