Update 09/14/17: This article has been updated to reflect additional signatures to the letter calling for a boycott.

In a letter addressed to the UC Berkeley campus and the Berkeley community, 132 campus faculty members from various departments have called for a complete boycott of classes and campus activities during “Free Speech Week,” which will be held on campus from Sept. 24-27.

The letter was co-written by seven faculty members, including campus associate teaching professor of African American studies Michael Cohen. It calls upon faculty to take three steps: cancel classes and tell students to stay home; close buildings and departments and allow staff to stay home; and not penalize students who are afraid of coming to campus. The letter was also signed by 56 individuals who aren’t part of the UC Berkeley faculty.

“This is a clear threat to public higher education,” Cohen said. “People are coming to humiliate others and incite violence. … The boycott is a refusal to allow this to happen on our campus.”

According to Cohen, most of the students in his African American Studies 27AC class are students of color. Cohen said he believed that for him to ask his students to be on campus during Free Speech Week was unethical and discriminatory.

Free Speech Week is being hosted by the Berkeley Patriot, a conservative student newspaper. The four-day event includes themes such as “Feminism Awareness Day” and “Mario Savio is Dead.” Speakers scheduled to be on campus include Milo Yiannopoulos and Steve Bannon.

“We’re not afraid of Milo, Ann (Coulter) or Bannon’s words. We have a deep anxiety over the violence that their followers bring in response,” Cohen said. “Chancellor Christ’s idea that we can have these people on campus is a fantasy and a dangerous one.”

Check back for updates.

The Daily Californian could do far worse than make its September 27th issue an FSM issue with a full page photo of Mario Savio on the first page.

  • vettelover

Screw them! They are a bunch of freak pedophiles anyway and should not be allowed any where near young people

  • Rollie

Words were spoken, then other words were spoken against the first words. No existences ceased. The sky didn’t fall, and the rivers didn’t run red. The sun rose again in Berkeley. Take a hint, you authoritarian professors and you would-be student censors—this is what debate looks like in an free society.

  • Patrice Cassidy Ripley

This is idiotic , blaming conservatives for their reaction to what conservatives have to say? Whatever happened to “Only you can control how you react to what other people do or say”? This is something that is obviously not taught in schools anymore and should be immediately reinstated. If a person is this distressed by opposing viewpoints, they should not be students in college , nor should they be teaching at a college.

  • alwaysthink

It’s amazing how these Alt Right/Russian trolls are all over the DailyCal comments.

Stay strong CAL this to will pass and campus can return to normal.

Just ignore them, don’t allow them to start trouble and they’ll go elsewhere. There really aren’t that many of them.

    • Patrice Cassidy Ripley

I am a housewife from Maryland , and I do not understand this nonsense. Please tell me why representation of conservative voices on campus is unacceptable. I have watched several speeches by the people mentioned and none of them are racist, or fascist in any way. When I was in college we listened to all sides and no one was damaged from hearing opposing opinions, or even angry slurs etc…because we were adults.

    • California Defender

Your comment neatly displays the anti-intellectual dogma of the left.

When confronted with differing views, a leftist will lob false labels in hopes of whipping up a mob to condemn a person without any evidence.

Then they play victim, urging the mob to stay strong when fighting against those false labels.

But when the differing view persists, they plug their ears, pretend those who hold those views are few, and retreat to their safe bubble of groupthink.

    • ⭐⭐Haseo⭐⭐

Thats right, retreat to your tiny echo chamber. We will take back the state of California for the United States of America. Just pretend its not happening, everything will right itself ;) Capitalism is going to dominate the ideology of the coming era due to you people’s stupidity <333 Thank you for that, so much. No sarcasm, I mean it.
      Praise kek!

  • Ted

I would think that in-state students paying over $13K and out-of-state students paying over $40K tuition per year (and/or their parents) would take offense to teachers who want to cut classes. I don’t suppose the students will get tuition rebate checks for classes cancelled by teachers. Sorry kids, money down the drain.

  • chosen

Look at the signers and their departments. The most useless departments on campus.

  • chosen

Professors who boycott the university during Free Speech week should lose one week’s salary. No work, no pay.

  • FreedomFan

It is sad that so many weak-minded individuals have been hired to teach at an erstwhile prestigious university.

  • the devil

No, absolutely don’t let alt-rt chase you away from succeeding this semester and graduating. Missing a week, you might as well drop out altogether because catching up afterward will be overwhelming. The point of alt-rt speakers on Cal campus is to make it hostile toward you. Unless the whole university is shut down this is just a dirty trick. Make an even more powerful commitment to get your full course at Cal.

    • California Defender

      Says the devil.

Or students could peacefully attend Free Speech Week and enlighten themselves with views and opinions they’ll never hear in the cold conformist classrooms of Berkeley.

  • dhorowitz10

Fire these jackasses. They’re a threat to free speech and to the very idea of a university. You can bet their reading lists don’t include texts that don’t share their viewpoints. What a disgrace.

  • hoapres

If it weren’t for tech and movies, California would be a third world country. Wait, we already are.

Just change Reagan in this video to Trump. The liberals are running scared that we actually have a President that might actually DO something. Replace Libya with North Korea.

Veterans are finally seeing a functioning VA, Medicare is being tackled, immigrants are being cut back, and hopefully we have had our last effing green card giveaway, forever.

  • mcsandberg

If it is your campus, why are taxpayer dollars being used to fund it? If you want to shut the campus down to allow only those in the tiny progressive bubble to be on campus, purchase the campus and run it as you see fit.

That’s all I’ve ever asked of progressives – stop trying to use state power to satisfy your whims. If you want to shut down an oil refinery – buy it. If you want to shut down hydraulic fracturing, purchase all the mineral rights in the area you don’t want that activity to occur in. If you want to shut down a coal export facility, buy it.

Atlas Shrugged was supposed to be a warning, Not A Newspaper!

    • Nunya Beeswax

And here I thought it was a tedious, overlong tract with wooden characters and an unconvincing plot.

      • mcsandberg

Atlas Shrugged was how Ayn Rand chose to introduce her philosophy of Objectivism ( http://www.aynrand.org/ideas/overview ). It is the first building block of a philosophical system called Objectivism. The entire world has abandoned collectivism and you could say that it all started with Atlas Shrugged. It was the 1st best seller to espouse an individualist philosophy. It is the book that introduces people to the great Library of Liberty. http://oll.libertyfund.org , http://www.fee.org/library/ and http://mises.org/Literature are good places to start exploring it.

I have met many Tea Partiers who talk about how Atlas was the book that opened their eyes. They then go on to the other classics of liberty – The Road to Serfdom, The discovery of Freedom, Free to Choose and even Human Action.

Now, lots of people are working in the field of Objectivism. http://atlassociety.org , https://www.theobjectivestandard.com and https://www.galtsgulchonline.com , for example.

        • Turgenev’s “Fathers and Sons” predates it considerably as popular individualist literature, and it’s a considerably improved read. The first 400 pages of Atlas Shrugged are a delight, but by 600 it’s a slug running on a broken record player. Just in general… there’s far better individualist lit out there (albeit not so well known) from both a literary and philosophical frame.

          • mcsandberg

Atlas Shrugged was the first individualist best seller. It’s still on the best seller lists today, for a reason. Objectivism is a philosophy of optimism, for living in this world. We aren’t interested in nihilism.

    • FreedomFan

Antifa must have borrowed their masks, uniforms and ideology from ISIS.

  • IAF101

Mental midgets who dont have the courage or the conviction that their positions will stand up to intellectual scrutiny often resort to boycotts and running away.

The moronic claim that the “right” will cause violence is comical considering that all the Business owners in Berkley area know who smashed shop windows and threw molotov cocktails – it wasn’t the “right” – it was a fascist terrorist group ironically called AntiFA .

The political establishment and especially the failed administrators of Berkley have neither the courage to confront these pseudo academics nor the temerity to call these AntiFA what they are – which is terrorists.

  • FreedomFan

Attention! Hurricane Ben has made landfall will shortly melt the snowflakes of Berkeley. All students flee your nearest truth-free puppy-filled safe space and wait until the danger has passed.
    That is all.

  • You know, this is total BS. I got 5 years of content to put into 4 years of an engineering degree. Maybe the “studies” programs have time for this crap but serious degrees don’t.

    • FreedomFan

For what is taught in “-Studies” classes, you really don’t need any college; you already know the subject thoroughly, namely:
      Straight white men = bad
      Everyone else = good
      Now where’s my degree?

  • mogden

These professors have demonstrated their manifest unfitness for academic life and should be terminated immediately.

  • FreedomFan

Why do Berkeley faculty members hate gay people like Milo so much?

    • ⭐⭐Haseo⭐⭐

Because they are “Dangerous” to communism lol

  • MrReasonable

“We’re not afraid of Milo, Ann (Coulter) or Bannon’s words. We have a deep anxiety over the violence that their followers bring in response,”

What a flat out lie! Their followers don’t bring violence, it is the people on your side professor, that bring the violence. The left are the violent ones, and always have been.

Lol, these teachers teach things that I can learn on the INTERNET in about a few week and it takes them a semester. The only way to get a job in these studies is to be hired to teach. They are literally teachers who have only taught and only will. They have no scope on the real world.

  • Please! Let the “history of art” and gender-studies and other irreplaceable people who signed this letter stay home! Maybe they could even stay home permanently–and the university could get back to the business of learning, exploring, challenging, provoking, and generally facing up to its grand tradition of inquiry. The people who signed this letter are obviously in the wrong place.

How can you defeat bad ideas without hearing them. Someone should let them know that the violence has been caused by BLM and Antifa almost exclusively during the last 2 years. Look at the arrest records. Look at the film, look at the damage. The driver of the car in Charlottesville was an anomaly. Hope that racist neo Nazi gets the death penalty.

  • So your response is to give up and hide? No, let law enforcement have a huge presence to protect the peaceful students who have a right to the education they are paying for, and continue to crack the skulls of any idiot, regardless of side, who tries to start violence.

Democrats are fascist cowards who hate free speech. They are also Nazis who want to stop a Jew from speaking.

awwwww…you mean you can’t take a little bit of talk-back? a little bit of challenging to your ideas? who’s the snowflake now? buck up and discuss the issues.

Protip: If you are looking for stable employment after your time at Cal, do not choose any of the majors represented by the signatories.

    • hoapres

If you are looking for stable employment then avoid STEM.

      • YehoshuaFriedman

You want job security slinging burgers? Go for it. People who know how to do real work in the real world think otherwise. Or maybe you can make more money working for the state, if you can get it.

        • hoapres

I will tell that to the homeless engineers/scientists in the Bay Area. Avoid STEM as a career, you will do a LOT BETTER in the trades.

    • hoapres

If you want stable employment then you might be better off avoiding college all together.

  • Berkeley is an absolute joke these days, no question about it.

    • hoapres

With the exception of the STEM departments, I would agree with you.

    • Frank Sories

      Don’t go there.

  • Rollie

From the letter: “Cancel classes and tell students to stay home.”

Wow. It’s not enough that these professors would have the event cancelled if they could, and thereby deny students the opportunity to hear a controversial speaker. But having lost that battle, and confronting the reality that Shapiro will appear after all, they now want fellow faculty to COMMAND students to stay home. The authoritarianism in this is staggering, and reveals the professors’ belief that their students aren’t to be allowed to do their own thinking, but instead should only see and hear what their wisened elders decide they can handle.

  • FreedomFirst

    Lol. Their desperation is showing.

  • Jesse V

Look at the departments these people represent. They’re almost entirely devoid of any respectable STEM department that would earn your child a good wage in our modern world (and a return on a hefty tuition for a parent). Pathetic.

Of course they’re voicing indignation and manufacturing outrage. This disquiet, which they themselves generate, is that which they point to to justify their own salaries and existence in 21st century academia.

    • hoapres

STEM jobs don’t pay that well and suck as a career.

      • Bob Bell

Yes, those poor underpaid engineers and programmers, plus they never get to say, “You want fries with that?”. Much better to have a career as a Gender Studier.

        • hoapres

Don’t want to give you the bad news but STEM doesn’t pay that well and yes some really are out on the street homeless.

          Let’s see.

An electrician apprentice starts out at $28 an hour right out of high school. After 5 years, he is up to $60 an hour with also having a pension with decent health insurance which is a heck of lot better than most software engineers are making.

          • Scott Jenner

plus once an electrician, making extra cash on side jobs is pretty easy. At least I speak Spanish so if there are tons of mexicans on the job, I can speak to them unlike Telagu Indians. I’d rather eat carne asada burritos everyday with the mexican workers than smell stinky fish head curry around mealy marble indiots!

          • Bob Bell

No denying that there is good money in the construction trades and other “work with your hands” fields. Of course, in a housing bust $60 per hour times 0 hours isn’t so hot. But in any event the discussion was (I thought) in the context of Berkeley students. STEM graduates on average make a lot more than “Studies” majors. If you start as an electrician right out of high school, chances are you’re not going to be picking up a Gender Studies degree at night but I’m sure there are exceptions. Thank you for bringing up a very good point though – you don’t have to go college to make good money. What’s that old saying – do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life?

          • hoapres

But the relevant number to look at would be the ratio of STEM wages / skilled construction labor. The ratio used to be greater than 1 and it is now less than one.

Well, that’s what happens when you get h1bs working for $60K a year and OPTs working for minimum wage.

          • Scott Jenner

so true! I remember that construction jobs used to pay half of what STEM entry jobs paid. Now the apprentice entry level no experience trades pay BETTER than any STEM job plus benefits like pension and training FREE.

          • Bob Bell

No, I don’t think that’s the relevant ratio in the context of this discussion, which is about UC Berkeley students. It is the relevant ratio in a different, and important, discussion we need to be having as a nation though.

          • Scott Jenner

well there will always be a need for a plumber or electrician to fix stuff when it breaks and it does quite a bit. There will be tons of jobs fixing the entire south east of the nation for a few years at least as STEM jobs exit the country.

      • Scott Jenner

no kidding! Wages are same now as they were 20 years ago. I remember making $40 an hour 20 years ago and no it dropped with inflation. Even plumbers make more now

      • You are misinformed. I can’t graduate enough structural engineers.

        • hoapres

Well If you are the Professor then you want more students. If you are looking for a job then you don’t want more competition being more entrants into your field.

        • Timtim

Engineers from 4-5 year degrees in traditional fields from top tier universities remain in demand. But there are a lot of “STEM” degrees that start in community college and end in lower tier colleges, like “biology protection science,” i.e. ordering HAZMAT suits for firemen that are only ever worn for the training exercise given by the vendor selling the suits. But it is true that the captains of industry keep saying “We need more STEM…” but what is cut off is: “…who will work for minimum wage!” Fortunately they invented H1B1, people who have to work free, unreported overtime or they will get fired and have to go home. The company holds their visa.

          • You have a lot of very good points.

  • hoapres

Don’t see any engineering and science people on the list.

    • JB

      They work for a living.

      • hoapres

        +1

        That’s the point.

    • There’s an interesting hypothesis about how campus PC is just a desperate attempt on behalf of the humanities to remain relevant as students increasingly choose STEM majors.

Sure, grads in the ChemE department might make 2x as much as grads in our department, but does your department have as many queer black transwomen as we do? Didn’t think so!

      • lspanker

The real dirty secret about the various and sundry race/class/gender victim/grievance studies programs masquerading as “the humanities” is that it provides a dumping ground for all the “diversity” admission candidates who lack the demonstrable intellectual horsepower or academic ability to survive and graduate from any degree program of substance. Offering these courses allows these marginal minds to pretend that they are going to college while producing more cannon fodder for the hard left.

        • Bob

I’ve been pondering that very issue and have concluded that “studies” departments offer little more than babysitter courses that are impossible to fail. Or at least they’re impossible to fail if your race or ethnicity matches the subject of the course. I’d love to see the numbers. Anyway, these departments seem to exist primarily as a way to artificially inflate minority graduation rates, which is a huge disservice to the students.

        • Back about 30 years ago the military stopped taking candidates for officers training school from the people who had “education” degrees. They were just not up to the intellectual rigors of a military career.

          • lspanker

Ironic that for all the insults and derision that the self-proclaimed intelligentsia on the left direct at the military, the fact of the matter is that ongoing education is critical to promotion and advancement in the armed forces, both at the officer and enlisted level. Any candidate for O-6 (Captain in the Navy and Coast Guard, Colonel in all other branches) has the equivalent of an MS degree, or at least an MA with a strong STEM base in his/her undergraduate studies. There’s a reason that many large companies look at former officers for their executive and operations leadership, as those people have had to demonstrate their proficiency in running a large, complex operation, something your typical fluff PhD on a college campus has never had to do…

        • Terrence Jeffrey Johnson

And the sad truth is had these people decided to go to a trade school and become electricians or plumbers they’d be making plenty of money once they got out.

          • lspanker

For some of them, yes, but methinks that many of those in the PC Fluff Studies track lack the mental horsepower or the work ethic to even make it in those fields (you can’t be a complete dummy and be a competent trades worker). These people would be far better off if they skipped college completely and went right into food service or retail sales jobs that are matched to their demonstrable intellectual capacities. They would be making the same money without the college degree, and at least they wouldn’t be in debt due to student loans…

      • cadcam

        Dang. You win.

    • cadcam

Of course. They actually are learning something valuable in the marketplace and have homework to get done. There is an article in the UPENN newspaper (the DP) about how SJW are having a hard time balancing their school work and activism. At $65,000K a year for tuition and room/board, etc. they better get their frickin butts back to their dorms and do their frickin school work.

  • hoapres

Sounds like these people need to get a REAL job.

  • Grandpa Dino

    Dear Signers:

Thank you very much for your letter. We will give it our utmost consideration.

    (Sound of shredder in operation).

    • California Defender

No, don’t shred it as that’s a typical action of the left. Instead, hold it up for all to see!

Hopefully they do boycott Berkeley, leaving just the hard working STEM students to utilize the entire campus for a much higher and better purpose.

Free Speech Week will then become a permanent year round event, the boycott will likewise become permanent, and Berkeley will be restored to its former glory.

      Perfect!

      • alwaysthink

You should read the letter. Along with the talkers the Alt Right forces are planning to once again have their violence seeking thugs invade the civic center so they and the COS Playing black grabbed thugs can have their fake fights. That traveling horde of Nazi, KKK and White Supremacists will once again be in town trying to cause trouble that they organize with their antifa players.

The ordinary citizens and leftist in Berkeley want nothing to do with these invaders. And have chosen to ignore them.

        • California Defender

So you’re a conspiracy theorist, eh? Antifa is actually working with Nazis and the KKK to have “fake fights”, presumably with fake blood, a professional pyrotechnics display, and a troupe of COS players performing a well rehearsed drama for the cameras?

I hope you’re not a student at Berkeley. To know you have wasted my tax dollars and your time would make me sad.

          • SarahBJones

            pot, meet kettle.

        • lspanker

Along with the talkers the Alt Right forces are planning to once again have their violence seeking thugs

Parroting the same hysterical nonsense over and over again won’t make it true.

        • Leftist dingbats like you do not represent the majority, “NeverThinks.”

        • Kareem O’Wheat

Antifa is showing up again? BLM too? Or as you guys call them, the Lollipop Guild & the Sunshine Youth Club.

        • Debra Blouin

You must have the least appropriate screen name.

        • Terrence Jeffrey Johnson

          Put the bong down, neverthink….

      • SarahBJones

you all can talk all you want. we don’t have to listen while violent alt-right whacks walk around threatening physical violence. we can resist you all from the safety of off-campus locations.

        • You’re so scared! That’s too bad!

        • lspanker

you all can talk all you want. we don’t have to listen while violent alt-right whacks walk around threatening physical violence

They aren’t threatening “physical violence”. They are threatening to express ideas and concepts you simply lack the intellectual and emotional ability to handle as a grown, mature adult, that’s all.

        • Kareem O’Wheat

          Run along Antifa-pet.

        • Debra Blouin

You really are that weak. Wow.

          • lspanker

SBJ’s comments makes it quite clear that we are admitting too many people into our state colleges and universities who don’t belong there in the first place…

        • How many violent alt-right people have you personally encountered? And more particular to the circumstances, how many of the prospective speakers do you know to have threatened or incited physical violence?

          • lspanker

How many violent alt-right people have you personally encountered?

How many people of opposing points of view has this poor child ever encountered in her short, wasted life? Not many, I am willing to bet. If she is anything like the vast majority of “under-represented” people of color in college these days, she’s majoring in a “studies” program geared around her particular racial/ethnic group, living in a racial/ethnic themed dorm, belonging only to her particular racial/ethnic themed social groups and clubs, having few or no friends in college outside her particular racial/ethnic group, planning on attending a racial/ethnic themed graduation (IF she ever graduates)… while complaining about how people in college are so “racist”.

      • leducviolet

You armchair reactionaries are so brave behind your keyboards but you cut and run in the streets. Go troll Liberty U you cowards

        • Kareem O’Wheat

Said a mask-wearing Antifa goon from his mom’s basement.

        • lspanker

Not all of us have to resort to beating people up or breaking things to get our point of view across. Some of us can do it with keyboards where we use facts and logic to win others over to our way of thinking. You should try that some time…

  • rijman

“We’re not afraid of Milo, Ann (Coulter) or Bannon’s words. We have a deep anxiety over the violence that their followers bring in response,” Cohen said. So Antifa and BAMN are Milo, Coulter and Bannon followers? Someone needs a reality check on who’s bringing the violence. The faculty also needs to understand the school is financially in debt, Chancellor Christ has discussed this, and continuing to shut down conservative speakers isn’t helping Cal with their conservative alumni and donors.

    • C Bierbauer78

BS. This is a right wing ploy to drain the University of resources for non-educational activities.

      • rijman

Are you calling Chancellor Carol Christ a right winger? Are you in complete disagreement with Carol Christ and the Cal Law School Dean on free speech at Cal? You’re right, there is some BS around here…

        • lspanker

This is Bierbauer’s usual schtick, it’s not like anyone takes him seriously here…

      • roccolore

Fascist Democrats like you are cowards.

      • SecludedCompoundTTYS

lol, they do it already without the need of a right wing plot to take .000001% of the budget. Such a lemming with a complete lack of common sense.

      • SecludedCompoundTTYS

        Yea that makes sense.

  • lspanker

“This is a clear threat to public higher education,” Cohen said. “People are coming to humiliate others and incite violence. … The boycott is a refusal to allow this to happen on our campus.”

What complete nonsense. The only ones inciting violence in Berkeley are on the left, and the only ones that stand to be humiliated are those who are clearly too emotionally and intellectually handicapped to win others over to their way of thinking in open discussion and debate.

  • elrod

Shame on the faculty. They’re also making this a bigger deal than it needs to be, now they’re drawing more attention to the events.

    • lspanker

Note how the most hysterical ones are the ones who apparently were accepted to Cal on some type of AA/Diversity platform or “social promotion” in the failing K-12 public school system as opposed to their own academic or intellectual merits…

      • Dan Lack

You mean sort of like Clarence Thomas at Yale right?

        • Mark Talmont

          And Obama at Harvard?

          • Frank Sories

I think Obama’s resume makes it clear that his admission was a good decision. If he received a full scholarship and monthly stipend, I’m sure the University would still consider it a good investment.

        • lspanker

I don’t recall Clarence Thomas ever throwing a tantrum, breaking things, or attacking the other members of the Supreme Court when he was the minority on a particular decision. Agree with him or not, he’s an intellectual giant compared to your average Berkeley liberal, who apparently is scared to death of people with dissenting ideas expressing them in public.

      • Michelle Endo

Race-based affirmative action hasn’t existed at the UC in decades and your argument is totally baseless. There is no proof whatsoever these faculty members have lesser academic merit. Keep crying, Abby.

        • lspanker

Race-based affirmative action hasn’t existed at the UC in decades

De jure AA, perhaps, but Cal still uses the guise of “diversity” to let in marginal minds who have no business occupying space on a college campus, of which those who call for this boycott are Exhibit A.

There is no proof whatsoever these faculty members have lesser academic merit.

How many of these crybabies are STEM majors vs. individuals who have pursued various racial/ethnic/gender victim/grievance studies programs? The minorities pursuing EECS and Chem E degrees aren’t the ones p!ssing and moaning here…

        • zzz

“There is no proof whatsoever these faculty members have lesser academic merit. Keep crying, Abby.”

By nature of their complaint they show a lack of academic merit. If there were any right wingers on campus and they said the same thing about… say for example Clinton flunky Robert Reich, then the right winger would show their lesser academic merit. Going into the studies fields show a lack of intellectual merit on every level.
