Body found at South Berkeley homeless encampment Friday morning

Berkeley Police Department is conducting an investigation regarding a body found at a South Berkeley homeless encampment Friday morning, according to a Nixle alert issued Friday evening.

The alert said BPD received a call about 10:14 a.m. reporting a body at an encampment on the east side of the BART tracks, just north of 63rd Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Both patrol and homicide investigators arrived on the scene. Although the alert said the initial assessment was that the individual was a 20-year-old woman, she has now been tentatively identified as 40-year-old woman.

According to Berkeleyside, BPD has identified the woman as 40-year-old Ariana Ruiz.

The alert said that BPD is conducting a death investigation.
