After months of vacancy at the historic Caffe Mediterraneum on 2475 Telegraph Ave., a new restaurant called “Boileroom” is set to open.

Signs of new life appeared in the form of a change of ownership application reading “Boileroom,” which was posted to the door. Few details have been released about the new business, but permit records indicate it will be a restaurant owned by Bruce Becker of Milano Properties.

Indications of development appeared in November when the city received a sign use permit for the new business.

Caffe Mediterraneum, often referred to as The Med, was a historic center for Berkeley’s Beat Generation, the Black Panthers and members of the Free Speech Movement. The restaurant changed ownership in November 2016 after 60 years, which left the business open to new owners who planned to remodel and rebrand the business.

Property owner Bruce Becker could not be reached for comment as of press time.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
