Jan. 23 is National Pie Day. If you didn’t know, now you do. Not to be mistaken for Pi Day, National Pie Day is a day devoted to celebrating one of the greatest and most delicious treasures of the world: pie. Yes, this is, in fact, an actual holiday, and people do indeed celebrate it (We know — the world’s a wonderful place). This flaky dessert comes in many variations, and there’s sure to be something to satisfy everyone and their own tastes. Pie is probably one of the most underrated treats that many have neglected since the holidays. There’s more than just cake and cookies, Golden Bears. Pie shouldn’t just be consumed during the holiday season, but it should be Pie Day everyday, especially today! What more could you want than buttery pastry dough and perfectly sweetened filling? We spy, with our little pies, five places you should visit to celebrate National Pie Day. Shut your pie hole and take a break from studying to grab a slice of pie from one (or all) of our favorite pie spots around town!

Dora’s

Location: 1966 University Ave., Berkeley, CA 94704

Located on University Avenue, Dora’s is the place to be! Although this spot serves all sorts of yummy baked goods, the real star is, of course, the pie. With several rotating seasonal flavors, there’s a good amount of pie to choose from. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. If we had to choose our favorite, it would be the chocolate silk pie, hands down. An equally buttery and flaky crust, layer of rich flourless chocolate cake, velvety smooth chocolate mousse and crunchy cacao nibs, this pie is what dreams are made of. Just one bite of this one, and you’ll be hooked. Nothing beats these three layers dancing on your taste buds. It literally melts in your mouth. This one’s definitely a favorite in our book!

PieTisserie

Location: 1605 2nd Ave., Oakland, CA 94606

Although this spot’s far from campus, it’s well worth the journey. Close to the Lake Merritt BART station, PieTisserie serves up tasty pies that are sure to please everyone — and we mean everyone. We recommend any (and all) of the pies, especially the raspberry in chocolate crust pie. Imagine a fresh raspberry filling encased in a rich chocolatey crust, topped with fresh whipped cream. This pie gives us major chocolate-lava-cake vibes, except with raspberries, of course. If chocolate and raspberries aren’t your jam, try the spiced apple pie for a fresh take on your classic apple pie or the ginger lemon custard pie for a sophisticated spin on lemon meringue. Grab your friends and a couple slices, and enjoy these pies on the grass by the lake! What more could you want than friends, a view and delicious pie from PieTisserie?

Crixa Cakes

Location: 2748 Adeline St. #C, Berkeley, CA 94703

The pies are definitely a hot commodity at this joint, and rightfully so. Just a short bus ride away, Crixa Cakes serves delicious cakes and pastries as well as pies that are truly out of this world. With classics such as Boston cream pie and double apple pie, Crixa Cakes also offers a pear and rose pie that has won the hearts of many, including ours. Do we dare say aloud that their double apple pie could be as good as your grandma’s? Yikes, because it really is that good. A rare unicorn to the scene is the sour cherry pie. If you’re able to get your hands on this one, you’re truly the chosen one. Top off your slice with fresh cream for the ultimate treat. Don’t sleep on pie, especially ones from Crixa Cakes!

Lois the Pie Queen

Location:  851 60th St., Oakland, CA 94608

We have two questions: 1) Who is Lois? and 2) Why is she the pie queen? Lois the Pie Queen is a jack of many trades, two of them being Southern soul food and pie. The lemon ice box pie is a favorite among many regulars. Sweet and creamy, this tangy and refreshing dessert is the perfect ending to a delicious meal or a perfect start to your National Pie Day celebration! All we can say is that Lois sure does know a thing or two about pie. If you’re ever in the area, you must swing by Lois the Pie Queen and grab yourself a slice or an entire lemon ice box pie. As we said, it’s a must.

Sweet Adeline Bakeshop

Location: 3350 Adeline St., Berkeley, CA 94703

Serving an assortment of baked goods, the pies are definitely a strong contender. With a flaky crust and rich chocolate filling topped with cream and chocolate curls, it’s no wonder why the chocolate cream pie is one of the most popular flavors at this spot! If chocolate isn’t really your thing, Sweet Adeline Bakeshop also offers seasonal fruit pies which are equally as satisfying. So swing by for a sweet treat this National Pie Day — you won’t be disappointed!

Go ahead and treat yourself to a slice of pie from any of these tasty spots this National Pie Day. You deserve it! So what are you waiting for? Go get your pie on!
