UCPD received a report of a mountain lion sighting Wednesday, according to a UCPD Nixle alert sent Wednesday night.

A female UC employee was walking between Bowles Lot and Foothill Lot on Tuesday at 5 p.m. when she encountered a mountain lion cub, the alert said. The cub “immediately” ran away toward the Foothill residence hall.

There have been multiple mountain lion sightings within the past year, including one near Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in November and one in the Berkeley Hills in September. According to the UCPD alert, several sightings of mountain lions in the past few years have also occurred in the hills above the UC Berkeley campus.

UCPD is advising people not to hike or jog alone, especially between dusk and dawn, and also to make “plenty of noise” while hiking.
