Two women were assaulted during a strong-arm robbery in Southside on Sunday night.

About 9:26 p.m., Berkeley police received a report about the robbery, which occurred on the 2500 block of Hillegass Avenue near People’s Park.

The women were standing outside when a man approached them, according to Berkeley Police Department Lt. Joe Okies. After a brief conversation, Okies said the man pushed one woman to the ground, then punched the other woman in the face when she moved to help her friend.

The man then stole the cellphone of the woman on the ground and ran to a nearby van that fled the scene north on Bowditch Street.

Okies said he did not know if the women are affiliated with UC Berkeley.

The suspect is described as a Black male in his early 20s wearing a gray sweatshirt and dark pants.
