Here at The Daily Californian, the design department is responsible for both laying out the physical newspaper you pick up every day as well as handling all the illustrations you see accompanying feature stories, editorials and op-eds. Many of the staff also work on art in their own time, and in this series we highlight some of those pieces.
This week’s “From The Design Desk” comes from Ashley Zhang. Zhang is a freshman architecture major, and she is currently a layout designer for the Daily Cal. The first piece, “Samovar,” is a watercolor painting of a Russian teapot. The second piece, “Self Portrait,” is an interpretive self-portrait collage made out of magazines. “Vanity Teen Shoot” is an oil painting of a photo Zhang took while behind the scenes at a photoshoot for the magazine Vanity Teen in Paris. The fourth piece, “ABC,” is an oil painting inspired by her experience as an “American born Chinese” person. The final piece, “Shanghai Apartment,” is an oil painting of a photo Zhang took of her brother and grandfather while in his apartment in Shanghai.
