A pedestrian found a dead baby boy on the West Berkeley shoreline while walking near the Tom Bates Regional Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon, as first reported by Berkeleyside.

According to Berkeleyside, the pedestrian reported the found baby about 2:40 p.m., and Berkeley police and firefighters responded at the shoreline, west of the sports field.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau also responded and recovered the body, and a coroner’s investigation will take place, the Berkeleyside article said.

Berkeley Police Lt. Kevin Schofield said in the article that the baby still had the umbilical cord attached and was “fairly well developed.” He added that it was likely the baby was washed up onto the shore.
