Two weeks after its first win and highest score of the season, No. 12 Cal men’s gymnastics heads to Colorado Springs to compete in the 26th annual MPSF Championships.

Despite their recent success at home, the Bears have a hard task ahead of them as they face No. 11 Air Force, No. 4 Stanford and No. 1 Oklahoma.

This will be Cal’s fourth time facing Stanford this season, and if the past is any indicator, it will likely be their fourth time finishing behind their dominant rival.

The Bears came in second behind the Cardinal at both the Stanford Open and the Pac-12 Invitational. Cal also finished fourth at the International Collegiate Challenge, which Stanford won.

Stanford isn’t the only familiar opponent, as the Bears finished behind the Sooners in early March when they met on Oklahoma’s Senior Night. They still currently maintains the top ranking in the nation, while also being ranked in top three in five out of six events.

Oklahoma just finished their fourth straight undefeated regular season with a close win over No. 7 Ohio State, 413.650 to 412.700, for its 84th consecutive meet victory.

This weekend, the Sooners are the favorite to add to their long list of streaks as another victory would give them a seventh consecutive MPSF conference championship.

Although it is unlikely that Cal will best Stanford or Oklahoma, a win against Air Force is not so far-fetched. The Falcons just won their ninth straight USAG Collegiate National Title, in which they claimed nine All-American Awards.

Two weekends ago, the Bears use their home gym advantage and Senior Night spirit to earn them their highest score of the season — 399.100 — for their first, long-awaited meet title of the season.

If their team can further build on this success, they may be able to edge out Air Force and slightly improve their national rankings, even if they won’t be able to add another win to the scoreboards.
