2100 block of Essex Street now open after closure related to police activity

Berkeley Police Department released a Nixle alert at about 11:50 a.m. Wednesday announcing the closure of the 2100 block of Essex Street to vehicle and pedestrian traffic as police searched for an armed suspect. As of 2:40 p.m., the road is now open, and the search has concluded.

The alert advised community members to stay away from the area, which is bounded by by Prince Street, Shattuck Avenue, Emerson Street and Wheeler Street.

According to BPD spokesperson Officer Byron White, BPD received reports at about 11:30 a.m. of someone standing in the middle of Essex Street screaming. When officers arrived, they discovered a gunshot victim with a serious injury, who was then transported to a local hospital.

There is no further information, as the investigation is ongoing, but White confirmed that the officers have concluded their search.
