Group of unknown young men assaults 72-year-old man

Berkeley Police Department released a Nixle alert at approximately 12:09 p.m. regarding a group of six to eight young men who assaulted a 72-year-old man July 6 at about 3:30 a.m.

The incident occurred near University Avenue and Addison Street, the alert said. The group allegedly shoved the man to the ground and began repeatedly kicking him. The man was seriously injured but has since been treated and released from a local hospital, the alert added.

Witnesses describe the suspects as six to eight Black males in their late teens to early 20s who fled the scene in a silver or white minivan — possibly a Nissan Quest.

Community members with information about the incident are advised to call BPD’s Homicide Unit at 510-981-5741.
