Good things are supposed to come in threes — and in Cal redshirt senior inside linebacker’s Jordan Kunaszyk’s case, his fortuitous trio has come in the form of preseason watchlists for three prestigious awards.
In addition to being named to the Butkus and Lott IMPACT award lists, on Tuesday Kunaszyk was announced to be on the watchlist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, presented by the Football Writers Association of America, or FWAA, to college football’s best defensive player.
In his junior year, Kunaszyk led Cal with a career-high 74 tackles, including 11 tackles and 2.5 sacks when Cal beat No. 8 Washington State last October.
Kunaszyk additionally established himself in another upset, when he caught an interception at the Cal 10-yard line, allowing Cal to eventually win in a 52-49 double overtime victory against the Oregon Ducks in 2016.
The five finalists for the award will be announced by the FWAA and Charlotte Touchdown Club on Nov. 14. The 2018 recipient will be announced at the annual Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet on Dec. 3.
