On Tuesday, Cal football senior Patrick Mekari was named on the preseason watchlist for the Outland Trophy by the Football Writers Association of America, an award presented to college football’s best interior lineman.
This is the first year the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases will partner with the Outland Trophy as a part of a national awareness campaign emphasizing the importance of influenza prevention during the 2018-19 flu season.
Up to seven finalists will be named Nov. 14, with only three moving on by Nov. 19. During the College Football Awards Show on Dec. 6, retired offensive lineman and 2006 Outland Trophy recipient Joe Thomas will announce the winner.
As a junior, Mekari set career highs for both playing in and starting 10 games as left tackle, earning him an honorable mention in the All-Pac-12. At Cal, Mekari has played in 24 games with 14 starts during his first three seasons.
