2 auto burglaries reported in Southside Berkeley on Sunday afternoon

Two auto burglaries occurred in the Southside area Sunday afternoon, according to a Nixle alert released at 5:32 p.m.

According to the alert, the male suspect smashed the windows of and stole items from two vehicles, which were parked and unattended. The first vehicle was broken into in the Banway Building parking lot at 12:07 p.m., and the second burglary took place at the Underhill Parking Structure at 1:46 p.m. Neither vehicle was affiliated with UC Berkeley, according to the alert.

Camera footage shows the suspect observing other parked vehicles, the alert added.

The suspect was driving a tan 1998 Nissan Pathfinder with the license plate number 4DWF261, according to the alert.

In the alert, UCPD added recommendations for discouraging auto burglaries, including closing vehicle windows, locking vehicle doors and refraining from leaving valuable items in plain sight.
