Season long training has shifted to game preparation for Cal football this week, but as Sept. 1 approaches, a key aspect of the big picture was revealed just six days before kickoff weekend.
With minimal surprise, the Bears’ 2018 captains will be redshirt senior running back Patrick Laird and redshirt senior inside linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk, both of whom represented the team at Pac-12 Media Day last month. Head coach Justin Wilcox revealed after Monday’s practice that the duo was selected by teammates.
A former walk-on from Arroyo Grande, Laird burst onto the scene last year by seizing the starting job and is currently on four preseason watchlists for a variety of accolades. Kunaszyk, a longtime force in the middle of the field for the Bears, is Cal’s active team leader in tackles and interceptions.
For Saturday’s season opener against UNC, senior left tackle Patrick Mekari and redshirt junior defensive end Luc Bequette will serve as the team’s game captains. Throughout the remainder of the season, game captains will be revealed on a similar basis — early in the week before the weekend matchup.
