Once again, there will be Golden Bears representing Team USA on the world stage, as three Cal men’s water polo players have been named to the 2018 FINA World Cup roster. Former Cal standouts Nic Carniglia and Luca Cupido will join current senior Johnny Hooper to represent the stars and stripes in Berlin, Germany from Sept. 11-16.

Meanwhile, assistant coach Jeff Tyrrell, a former player for the Bears himself, was selected to assume the same role on Team USA.

The trio of players heads into the World Cup having prior national team experience, led by Cupido who was a member of the 2016 Olympic team. Hooper spent all of last summer training with Team USA and playing in the world championships, while Carniglia also spent time training on the national roster in 2016.

The young Team USA roster will be led by veteran Jesse Smith, the only player with World Cup experience. In the 2014 World Cup, Team USA took home fourth place.
