Billy Carrigan, 20, passed away this morning as a result of major injuries he sustained during a car crash Sunday evening.
According to a press release from the California Highway Patrol, Carrigan was driving a 2001 Toyota Tacoma eastbound on Highway 36 near Susanville, Calif. at an "unknown high rate of speed" when he approached a curve in the road.
The vehicle was going too fast to safely make the sharp curve and it traveled off the roadway and became airborne, crashing into an embankment and colliding into several pine trees, according to the release.
The Associated Press has reported that Carrigan was a UC Berkeley student, but campus spokesperson Marie Felde said the university has not been able to confirm this.
After the accident, Carrigan was taken by air to the Enloe Medical Center in Chico, Calif.
