Officials from the Alameda County Coroner identified UC Berkeley senior Alan Hamai as the man who fell to his death from the roof of a three story house early this morning.
The death occurred at Hamai's residence, near the intersection of Durant Avenue and Bowditch Street.
Berkeley police are still investigating whether Hamai's death was an accident, said Berkeley police Officer Lyle Ledward.
Police said they received a call at 6:22 a.m. today when a pedestrian saw the body in the house's front yard.
Hamai's housemates said they did not know what happened until they were notified by police, and estimate that the death occurred between 2 and 5 a.m.
Hamai, an anthropology major, attended his graduation ceremony yesterday, housemates said.
Ledward said Berkeley police have reason to believe alcohol may have been involved.
He said homicide detectives were called in to investigate the incident because of the recent homicides that occurred in the Southside. Berkeley resident Maceo Smith was shot and killed Tuesday near the same intersection. UC Berkeley student Chris Wootton was fatally stabbed near sorority Chi Omega on May 3.
"Considering everything that has happened, there is an investigation by homicide detectives," Ledward said.
