Berkeley resident Anthony Beamon died from gunshot wounds sustained in a shooting late Wednesday night in South Berkeley in city's sixth homicide of the year.
Berkeley police found 29-year-old Beamon lying on the sidewalk of Tyler Street near California Street about two miles southwest of campus.
Police were called to the scene at approximately 11:32 p.m. Wednesday in response to reports of multiple shots fired near the intersection, said Berkeley police Officer Andrew Frankel.
According to a statement put out by Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss, an officer at the scene had to manage a small crowd of Beamon's family, community members and others who gathered on the block soon after the incident.
The victim was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland where he was pronounced dead as a result of the gunshot wounds, Frankel said.
Officers completed a neighborhood check and did not find any other victims, though they found a house and a parked car with damage related to gunshots, Kusmiss said.
Police have not taken anyone into custody, but homicide detectives have been interviewing witnesses and family members of the victim, Frankel said.
The homicide is the third this month in the city of Berkeley, following the fatal shooting of Berkeley resident Maceo Smith, 33, on May 13 and the fatal stabbing of UC Berkeley senior Chris Wootton, 21, on May 3.
