Voters in Alameda County cast ballots yesterday in favor of extending the utility tax for residents of the county's unincorporated areas until 2021.

Measure F passed with 64.63 percent of votes in the county's primary election, with 74 of the county's 1,200 precincts reported as of 1 a.m.

If approved by voters in the November election, the measure would impose a 6.5 percent tax on utilities used by residents in unincorporated areas only, such as Castro Valley, Ashland, San Lorenzo and Sunol.

The measure extends and increases a 5.5 percent tax on electricity, gas and telephone bills of residents in these areas that is set to expire in 2009.

The tax currently brings in revenues of about $9 million each year that are allocated to county services in the unincorporated areas. An additional $2 million in revenues is expected with the one percent increase.

While the measure would only apply to Alameda County's unincorporated areas, the tax must be approved by a countywide vote, as required by Proposition 218.
