A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train going about 77 miles per hour early this morning, police said.

At about 8:30 a.m. the Berkeley Police Department responded to a report of a man being hit by a train near Gilman Street and the railroad tracks, they are helping the Union Pacific Police with the investigation.

Police said the man was walking southbound on Harrison Street when the incident occurred.

According to police reports, the train's engineer spotted the man walking along the tracks and sounded the train's air horn for a quarter mile as the train approached the man. The man attempted to cross the tracks in front of the train at the last moment, causing the train to strike and kill him, the report said.
