The man charged with murdering UC Berkeley senior Chris Wootton pleaded not guilty on Monday after being denied bail last week.

Berkeley resident Andrew Hoeft-Edenfield, 20, allegedly stabbed Wootton, 21, in the parking lot of sorority Chi Omega well before dawn on May 3.

Both Hoeft-Edenfield, a then Berkeley City College student, and Wootton, a member of Sigma Pi, were part of a large group involved in a verbal exchange. The exchange soon turned violent with Hoeft-Edenfield allegedly taking out a knife and fatally stabbing Wootton in his upper chest.

Hoeft-Edenfield's murder charge includes possession of a deadly weapon and infliction of serious bodily injury.
