Thumb Wars: The Hills - Hate It

I am from "The Real OC." In high school, MTV made a reality show about a few of my classmates. The show-"Newport Harbor"-was boring, incoherent and perpetuated the stereotype that everyone from my home owns a yacht. People would constantly ask me if I knew the people from the show. It frustrated me to no end-so naturally, I watched every episode.
"The Hills" is a more grown-up version of the Orange County shows-no parents, more parties and set in Hollywood. It would be great to peek into the daily triumphs and travails of people whose lives are more glamorous than mine. But "The Hills" just doesn't satisfy that desire. Sure, the girls drive fancy cars, wear fabulous clothes and have jobs in the fashion industry. But "The Hills" feels scripted. I know that Hollywood is all about being fake, but it's as if the writers try to write lines that sound natural and instead can only come up with lines that sound flat, uninspired and unintelligent. I can handle shows of less substance if they are entertaining, but "The Hills" doesn't even come close. Nothing really happens on the show. So Audrina and Lo aren't getting along. Stephanie's birthday was a disaster. And I just wasted a half hour to learn this?
As one who has endured being from an area-turned-brand name, my quibble with "The Hills" and similar shows is a little personal. Now the whole country associates my alma mater with a short-lived reality show and idolizes a few people who are little more than bad actors working with an even worse script. In all honesty "The Hills" simply isn't good TV. So much of it is obviously made up-and it isn't even made up to be something that I would actually want to watch. My suggestion for MTV's next venture in perverting southern California: "The Real Hills: East Los Angeles". Now there's something I might consider watching.
