The Mannings. The Griffeys. Might want to consider adding the Murreys to that list.

True freshman Tarah Murrey of the No. 5 Cal volleyball team is only the latest in an illustrious athletic family tree, which already includes four basketball and two volleyball players.

This Saturday, Murrey will match up against one of them-her older sister Brittney, the setter for UC Riverside, in the final game of the Golden Bear Invitational.

"It's going to be really cool," Murrey said earlier this week in practice. "I'm really excited. I've never gotten to play against her. I played with her my freshman year in high school, but playing against her is going to be new."

Tarah and Brittney were practically bred for athletics. Their parents met at San Jose State, where their mother played volleyball and their father anchored the basketball squad. He was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the ninth round and continued to play overseas in Finland.

Along with the sisters, the Murrey family includes three sons, all of whom play collegiate basketball. The name most familiar to Cal fans is likely that of 6-foot-8 Stanford forward Josh Owens, Murrey's half brother.

"It's really fun," Tarah said. "We all get to talk about the great times we have, the low times we have, and we all understand each other. We're a really close family."

Murrey is herself one of the most sought-after recruits of her generation.

She has made an immediate impact on the Cal squad, utilizing her imposing and physical 6-foot-3 frame on the court to post 12 kills and 13 digs in three matches.

Sister Brittney is also having a solid start to the season. The junior leads all Highlanders starters with a .478 hitting percentage and has contributed 23 kills.

The Murrey parents will be in attendance at Haas Pavilion today to see their daughters battle it out, although Tarah admits that loyalties are a bit mixed.

"My mom said that she was going to tear a Riverside shirt in half and a Cal shirt in half," she said. "I think everyone just wants to see a good match, so both teams are going to put it out there."

But competition aside, what are family nights like at the Murrey house amongst a stable of athletic stars?

"The dinner table is just extremely loud," Tarah said with a laugh. "It's pretty crazy."
