Berkeley resident Jordan McKay was fatally shot in San Francisco while riding his bicycle on his way home from work two weeks ago.
On Sept. 17, McKay, 23, was shot at about 1:41 a.m. near the corner of Cabrillo Street and 15th Avenue in the Richmond District of San Francisco.
Witnesses at the scene said McKay was riding his bike on Cabrillo when two unidentified men began attacking him, according to San Francisco police Sgt. Antonio Casillas. After a fight and physical struggle, McKay managed to pull away, at which point one of the unidentified men fired a gun shot.
McKay sought help while wounded, knocking on the doors of several nearby houses in the neighborhood until he collapsed, police said. He was declared dead at the scene by the San Francisco Police Department.
Police said the shooting followed a confrontation between McKay and the two men in the car.
McKay's death is still undergoing investigation, Casillas said.
"Our facts are very limited and we don't have any strong leads at the moment, but this case is still pending," Casillas said. "We interviewed witnesses last night, so we are still trying to put together exactly what lead to (his) death."
No arrests have been made at this time, according to Casillas.
McKay attended Berkeley High School and was a recent graduate of UC Santa Cruz. He also worked as a computer animator at Assemble Design Boutique, located on Shattuck Avenue, and was a member of the Grameen Foundation, which helps developing nations begin small business enterprises.
Elisa Litsky, McKay's girlfriend, said he was a "vivacious and moving" young man.
"What is shocking to me about his death is simply seeing him reaching for the sky and then seeing him fall," she said.
McKay was involved in the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, which organized a bike ride last night to the site of the shooting and held a vigil there in his honor.
"We are simply trying to honor the things that he cared about," said Matthew McKay, his father. "His death has been a hole blown into our hearts."
An earlier version of this article stated that San Francisco police Sgt. Antonio Casillas said Jordan McKay's murder is still undergoing investigation. In fact, suspects of the homicide have not been convicted.
