It was a scene that the No. 13 Cal men's soccer team had played out before.

For the third time in as many games, the score was tied after 90 minutes and the Bears faced overtime. This game, though, was against Stanford.

But on this occasion it took less than two minutes for the ordeal to end, and in the easiest of fashions.

"It was a great pass by Hector (Jimenez)," sophomore Servando Carrasco said. "He played the ball in across the box, and it got stuck up in the lights so the goalkeeper couldn't see it. When he went to save it he dropped it right in front of me."

Carrasco didn't hesitate, tapping the ball into an open net in the 92nd minute for his third goal of the season, breaking the scoreless deadlock and giving the Bears (7-2-4, 2-1-2 in the Pac-10) the 1-0 win in their only match of the weekend.

"It was basically the easiest goal ever," Carrasco said. "A lot of the credit goes to Hector, though, for the pass."

With the assist Jimenez brings his season total to seven, leading not only the squad but also the conference.

The victory over the Cardinal snapped the three-game winless streak Cal had earned after two ties and a loss in Pac-10 play.

The mishandled catch was Stanford goalkeeper John Moore's first mistake of the night, after giving a stellar performance in regulation. The junior made nine saves to keep Stanford's (3-7-2, 1-3-1) hopes alive, surviving the 12 shots that Carrasco, Jimenez and Davis Paul took on his goal.

"The first half we played really well, we had a lot of chances," Carrasco said. "The second half was a little more equal, we both had chances that we couldn't put away. But we stepped up in overtime and got it done."

On the other side of the field, Cal goalkeeper Stefan Frei made only two saves, despite the Cardinal matching the Bears in shooting. Many of Stanford's shots were high or wide, causing Frei little trouble on the way to his fifth shutout of the season. The performance also lowered Frei's goals against average to 0.80.

After the win there was a large commotion, and not only because Cal had beaten its rival in the Cardinal's own Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The victory marked Cal coach Kevin Grimes' 100th career coaching win at Cal.

"Some of us knew about it going into the game," Carrasco said. "But he never said anything, he is really humble about that kind of stuff. After the game someone brought it up, and we definitely celebrated."

The Bears, now in the middle of the Pac-10 season, head into their bye week, which the players look forward to.

"It's great because it's a time to rest," Carrasco said. "We have guys who have knocks and injuries and they can start to recover. And we can look forward to UCLA (on Oct. 31)."
