Berkeley police say they found entombed remains of a human body Wednesday evening while conducting an investigation into a suicide in South Berkeley.
According to a release from Berkeley police Officer Andrew Frankel, police were investigating the Monday evening suicide of Hassan Bin Ali, a 60-year-old Berkeley resident.
Police arrived on the scene of a reported verbal argument on the 2200 block of Ashby Avenue on Monday evening where they were confronted by Ali, who was in the possession of a handgun. Police say Ali shot himself.
Ali was pronounced dead at the Alameda County Hospital in Oakland after being transported there by Berkeley Fire Department officials.
Police say information they learned during the investigation led them to obtain a search warrant for the address where the suicide occurred. During that search, shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday evening, "detectives discovered human remains entombed on the first floor of the building," according to the release.
Police are investigating the matter as a suspicious death case.
