A woman fell victim to a sexual assault early Friday morning, adding to a string of more than 10 crimes police believe is linked to the same predator.

At about 1:02 a.m., a woman walking home alone and was outside 2230 Haste Street when a male suspect approached her from behind and grabbed her dress, said UCPD Lt. Doug Wing.

The victim, who sustained minor injuries, turned around to see the suspect fleeing west on Durant Avenue and then south on Fulton Street.

UCPD officers were patrolling the area nearby and were first on scene, Wing said.

Officers from both UCPD and the Berkeley Police Department conducted a thorough search of the area but could not find the suspect.

Wing said that the suspect is likely the same predator responsible for a string of 11 sexual assaults occurring south of UC Berkeley since September because the behavior was similar.

The suspect is described as a white male with dark curly hair, about 5 feet 10 inches tall. He was wearing blue jeans and was carrying a green windbreaker.

Wing said UCPD and Berkeley police are working together to find the suspect.

"We are increasing our visibility in the south campus area and are exchanging information in our investigations," Wing said

UCPD is warning residents to be careful when in the area and encourages anyone with information regarding the assaults to report to police.

"People should be aware of their surroundings and if they are being followed, they should go to a safe place where there are lots of people and call the police," Wing said. "We encourage people to use our night safety programs and to try to avoid traveling alone."
