ASUC Committee Vote on Effort To Remove Sinanian Ends in Tie

ASUC Attorney General Michael Sinanian survived an attempt to remove him from office after an ASUC committee vote considering his removal ended in a tie.
The vote followed a motion by Cooperative Movement Senator Christina Oatfield to impeach Sinanian at a senate meeting on April 1.
But during a Constitutional and Procedure Review Committee meeting this week, the motion failed by a 3-3 vote. Removing Sinanian required a two-thirds vote from the committee and the senate.
Oatfield said she felt Sinanian mishandled the recall election of former Senator John Moghtader, prolonging the certification of election results.
After the bill failed, she said she would no longer pursue his removal.
"I don't think we have the votes," she said before the meeting.
Sinanian said he was relieved not to face a vote to remove him at last night's meeting, but was disappointed by his lack of support in the senate.
"Even though I wasn't impeached doesn't mean all members of the senate understand the decisions I made," he said. "Senators might still think I didn't have the student body in mind."
After being recalled by a 72 percent vote, Moghtader showed a video to Sinanian and The Daily Californian that Sinanian says proves Moghtader did not assault senior Dina Omar during a Nov. 13 Eshleman Hall altercation, an accusation that ignited the recall effort.
Moghtader said the effort to remove Sinanian mirrored his own recall.
"It shows a really despicable pattern that if you don't agree with someone's views then you basically try to remove them from office," he said. "The fact that we've had two attempts at that now seems to be a really disturbing pattern."
