Results of ASUC Elections Will Be Delayed Two Days

The results of last week's ASUC general elections have been delayed two days due to a misunderstanding by the Elections Council chair.
Tabulation will take place Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Evans Hall, after chair Emily Liedblad requested a temporary amendment to the elections by-laws. According to the original by-laws, tabulation should have begun by 4 p.m. Wednesday.
"It's a really small detail, it's not a big deal at all," Liedblad said.
After becoming aware of the Wednesday deadline in the Judicial Rules of Procedure, she filed a request to change the by-laws with the Judicial Council Sunday, which was approved Wednesday.
"It doesn't explicitly say in the elections by-laws when the good faith filing deadline ends," she said. "It was kind of buried."
The Elections Council chair may instate temporary rules in urgent situations, as was deemed the case.
"The Council not only believed that Ms. Liedblad addressed the issue of urgency ... but that all candidates would be affected equally," said Judicial Council Chair Kiira Johal in an e-mail.
There is typically a one-week filing period after the polls open for students to file elections violations against candidates. After tabulation, only the ASUC Attorney General may file violations.
Because she had already informed candidates and created a Facebook group to publicize the event, Liedblad said keeping the Friday tabulation date would be most convenient, adding that the mistake would in no way harm students.
"I don't see any foreseeable advantages or disadvantages to anybody," Liedblad said.
