While the university witnessed a drop in incoming freshmen who accepted their admissions offers for the fall, the number of community college transfer students admitted rose by 12 percent, UC officials announced today.
A total of 36,481 freshmen submitted statements of intent to register, as compared to 39,212 last year-a number in line with the university's goal to cap freshman enrollment by 2,300 students this year.
Community college acceptances reached a record high according to university data, with 19,607 students accepted to UC campuses for the fall.
This increase reflects both an increase in transfer applications and the UC Board of Regents' January resolution to up the number of community college transfers by 500 students.
Although UC Berkeley was not affected by this year's enrollment cuts, UC President Mark Yudof has warned of more drastic cuts for 2010-11 in light of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's May revisions to the state budget.
As compared to last year, the overall yield rate of students who accepted their admissions offers dropped from 51.1 percent to 47.9 percent.
The proportion of underrepresented student admissions rose by about 1 percent, to 24.9 percent.
