The UC system's $800 million deficit will dominate the upcoming UC Board of Regents meeting this month as the board will consider whether to extend the president's power in cutting salaries and enforcing unpaid furlough days.

The board, which will meet from July 14 to 16 in San Francisco, will consider a proposal that would clarify and possibly increase UC President Mark Yudof's power in enacting employee furloughs and salary cuts, according to the meeting agenda released today.

Yudof issued his three-option furlough and salary reductions plan two weeks ago, which a 8 percent salary cut, 21 days of furlough or a combination of a 3.4 percent cut and 12 furlough days.

Yudof's plan is expected to trim $200 million off the university's budget shortfall.

Staff unions, including Coalition for University Employees and University Professional and Technical Employees, are expected to attend and protest Yudof's proposed salary cuts.

The board will also consider whether it will declare the UC system to be in a financial emergency, which could allow Yudof to implement furloughs or salary cuts "on terms that the President deems necessary," according to a May proposal.

As for UC Berkeley, the board will approve the seismic retrofit of Memorial Stadium, a project which opened up to bidders last week.

Also on the agenda is the confirmation of 2010-11 Student Regent Jesse Cheng--who was nominated last month--and of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory interim director Paul Alivisatos .

On Wednesday, UC officials announced an 11-member search committee that will find the lab's pemananet director.

The three-day meeting will take place at the Mission Bay Community Center on the UCSF Mission Bay campus.
