Former Cal Football player Noah Smith will serve four years in prison after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting two female students while he was a student at UC Berkeley in 2007.

Smith, 23, was sentenced Tuesday after being convicted in June of one count of rape, one count of attempted rape and one count of forced oral copulation. He was arrested and charged in May 2007 after a female student reported to police that Smith had forced her to give him oral sex and then raped her in her apartment.

During the trial, two additional women offered testimony that he had also sexually assaulted them, but no separate charges were filed.

The additional women said in court that Smith faked an illness that he told them required collection of his sperm. They testified that he then exposed his genitals and, when they attempted to leave, physically assaulted and raped them.

Smith denied the charges in his testimony.

Alameda County Deputy District Attorney Patrick Moriarty, who said he believed Smith is a sociopath based on his actions and testimony given during the trial, asked for the maximum possible sentence of 17 years in prison.

But Alameda County Superior Court Judge Thomas Reardon sentenced Smith to only four years, citing his lack of a prior criminal record as a mitigating factor.

Calling the reduced sentence "the only saving grace" of the trial, Smith's attorney Colin Cooper said he believed the charges were false and that the accusers wanted to take advantage of Smith's high profile to tear him down.

During his testimony, Smith also said that he had supplied samples of his own urine to fellow teammates to help them pass drug tests. Police reportedly found urine specimen cups in Smith's car during their investigation, according to Moriarty.

A statement issued by Herb Benenson, director of media relations for Cal Athletics, rebutted Smith's statements about the urine samples.

"The claims made by Mr. Smith are completely false and have no credibility," the statement read. "There are policies and procedures in place to prevent the scenario that he described."

Smith was a highly recruited All-American wide receiver from Taft High School in Lakeview, Calif. In his three years playing for Cal, Smith played in 14 games, compiling six receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown, according to the Cal Athletics Web site.
