The red jerseys were out in numbers Friday afternoon as the Cal football team began week two of fall camp with a few starters battling injuries.

Cornerback Darian Hagan, linebacker Mychal Kendricks and receiver Nyan Boateng all sat out their second consecutive practice. Hagan has a sore knee, while Kendricks and Boateng are both recovering from concussions. They were joined on the sideline Friday by Chris Conte, who coach Jeff Tedford said has a "little pulled muscle," and safety Sean Cattouse, who has a pulled hamstring.

After not participating in most of the team and group drills yesterday, Jahvid Best ran through a normal first half of practice and sat out the majority of the second half, including a red-zone team drill and a kickoff return session.Tedford said that Best is "a little sore," and the rest is to "let his aches calm down a little bit," although Best looked as explosive as ever on one play during early team sessions, taking ahandoff right and slipping into the second level of defenders through a virtually nonexistent gap.

Receiver Michael Calvin, who appeared to tweak something at the end of a route during one-on-one's Friday and immediately walked over to a trainer, has a pulled muscle as well.

But so it goes as fall camp progresses, Tedford said, and as of right now, nobody is expected to be out for a significant amount of time.

"It's been physical," he said. "We practice at a high tempo all the time, we have full gear on and shoulder pads on and so it's that time of camp right now. We start getting some tired legs and some tweaked muscles. It's to be expected."

The absence of several veterans cleared the way for some younger guys to take reps with the first team. Redshirt freshman Josh Hill filled in for Hagan across from Syd'Quan Thompson, and during nickel packages -- when Thompson becomes the nickel back and shifts over to cover the slot receiver -- Hill and junior Bryant Nnabuife covered the wideouts. D.J. Holt replaced Kendricks at inside linebacker alongside Mike Mohamed.

On the other side of the ball, with Best taking it easy, Shane Vereen played the majority of the first-team downs with freshman Dasarte Yarnway also getting some work with the ones, particularly in goal-line situations. Tedford said that he wanted Yarnway -- who has played mostly behind the third-team O-line during the first week -- to see some better running holes, and that the freshman "has done a nice job" so far in camp.

"He's got a bright future," Tedford said.

Quarterbacks

Neither Kevin Riley nor Brock Mansion was outstanding on Friday, with Riley starting stronger than he finished and Mansion doing pretty much the opposite.

Riley threw perhaps his best ball of the afternoon in Cal's first team session, hitting tight end Tad Smith in stride up the seam for a touchdown with a defender on Smith's hip. In a later session he appeared to force two straight throws -- one to tight end Skylar Curran that was jumped and intercepted by Holt and one over the middle to Verran Tucker that was tipped into the air and almost intercepted. Riley did recover in his next sequence in the red zone, connecting with receiver Marvin Jones and tight end Anthony Miller for touchdowns from inside the 10-yard line on consecutive throws.

Mansion hit his low point with a poor read on a screen pass intended for Yarnway, which linebacker Ryan Davis easily stepped in front of and intercepted. Probably his most impressive throw came on a play where Vereen lined up in the backfield, motioned out wide and ran a deep post, as Mansion hit him in stride for what would have been a touchdown. Mansion also showed off a little mobility when he was flushed from the pocket, arced out wide to his left and threw a ball down the near sideline that was tipped by cornerback Charles Amadi and ended up in the hands of Marvin Jones.

"There was some success with everybody," Tedford said. "The defense had some, offense had some, so it kind of went back and forth."

Field Goals

The Bears ran a quick field-goal session at the very end of practice, in which Giorgio Tavecchio, David Seawright and Vince D'Amato took turns kicking from 26, 33 and 38 yards. Tavecchio made his attempt from the middle at 26 and the left hash mark at 38, but missed from the right hash at 33 after a bad snap. Seawright was good from 26 and 33, but missed from 38. D'Amato, the freshman, converted all three attempts.

Odds and Ends

-- Justin Cheadle continues to play right guard for the first-team offense, while Matt Summers-Gavin remains at left guard.

-- Brian Holley, one of a few players competing for the starting fullback job, threw a loud block against safety Brett Johnson on a screen pass.

-- Tedford was pleased with the team's work in situational drills, which are designed to "just get them on the field by themselves, get the coaches off. I thought they handled it pretty well."

-- Tedford also called attention to the play of tight end Skylar Curran, who is in the mix with senior Tad Smith, sophomore Anthony Miller and others at a tight end spot thatTedford called "completely open."

"I think he's caught up to the speed of the game," Tedford said of Curran. "He's catching all the balls. He's always had skill, but now I think he feels so much more comfortable that he's finally really settled into the position and he's doing a great job. He's going to play a lot for us."
