It appears that Cal women's soccer coach Neil McGuire called it quits after Cal's 1-0 loss to Sacramento State on Friday.

Reportedly, McGuire was so upset after the game that he told his squad in the locker room that he was done, leaving the Bears without a head coach for Sunday's matchup against No. 11 Santa Clara which resulted in a 1-1 draw.

According to Cal media relations, McGuire is taking time off to take care of some "personal matters." McGuire declined to comment.

Assistant volunteer coach Kelly Lindsey, who has been with the team for two weeks, managed the squad to a 1-1 double overtime tie with the Broncos.

"We're the ones that play anyway," senior co-captain Brianna Bak said. "A coach is a coach, players are what make a team.

"I wasn't happy or sad. I was indifferent. My team is the only thing that matters to me. And if (McGuire) ever comes back, then we will deal with it then."

McGuire has shown his emotions after losses before, like last year when he kicked the team out of the locker room after a brutal collapse against Cal State Fullerton. But he has never done this before.

"Friday was an emotional day for everybody and Saturday morning everybody showed up (except McGuire) and tried to put a big smile on their face," Lindsey said. "I'm sure the emotions of this will carry for a few days, but we have a very mature group and there's only one place to go from here."

No one really knows if he's going to come back or not, or they are just not saying it.

"It's really important for us to sit tight and let Neil and the administration work through this," Lindsey said. "We just have to try to keep the wheels on the bus until a final decision is made and we can all move forward."

Until then, it seems that the Bears are going to have to wait it out, which may not be a good thing with the opening of Pac-10 play scheduled for this weekend.

Despite the consecutive losses to unranked teams (prior to Sunday's draw), Cal is still 6-3-1 and in line for another NCAA tournament selection, considering the team got in last year with only 10 wins. So it wouldn't seem likely that McGuire's job was in jeopardy simply based on his team's performance.

Lindsey, who appears to be taking on a temporary managerial position, had her last coaching stint this past season in the WPS with Sky Blue FC. Having only come in two weeks ago, Lindsey said that she had no idea that this would happen and was as shocked as everyone else.

"Sometimes these things happen," Lindsey said. "I think the best thing to do is to find the positives, move forward and be the best Cal team that we can be."

The headline of an earlier version of this article suggested that Cal women's soccer coach Neil McGuire stepped down permanently. McGuire has stepped down indefinitely.
