It was announced yesterday evening that Cal women's soccer coach Neil McGuire will be resuming head coaching duties, just days after announcing he was taking an indefinite leave of absence to deal with "personal matters."
"I am reaffirming my commitment to Cal as the head women's soccer coach," McGuire said in a statement to Calbears.com. "I am deeply saddened I placed my team, program and administration in this unfortunate position. I had some profoundly difficult personal issues to deal with throughout last week, and I put myself ahead of our team, which goes against our ideal of program, team, individual."
After an unexpected loss to an unranked Sacramento State team last Friday, McGuire told the Bears that he would be stepping down until further notice. Volunteer assistant Kelly Lindsey coached Cal to a 1-1 double overtime draw with Santa Clara on Sunday in McGuire's stead.
In his three years as head coach at Cal, McGuire has accumulated a record of 31-17-3 and has taken the Bears to the NCAA tournament twice.
"Neil McGuire is the right coach for our program," Athletic Director Sandy Barbour said in a statement to Calbears.com. "I felt that more than two years ago when I hired him and I feel that today."
Cal is currently 6-3-1 and ranked 10th in the nation.
