Berkeley Police Department and UCPD officers searched the area around a Southside apartment building following a burglary and subsequent foot chase early Friday morning.
At approximately 12:08 a.m., Berkeley police received a call reporting a residential burglary on the 2300 block of Bancroft Way. The suspect allegedly took various items, including a red backpack with a laptop inside, according to Berkeley police Sgt. Patricia De La Luna.
A UCPD officer spotted an individual with a description matching that of the suspect, and a foot chase between the officer and the suspect ensued. The suspect dropped the backpack before running behind an apartment building at 2330 Blake St., De La Luna said.
The Blake Street apartment was cordoned off early Friday morning as officers searched the area with flashlights for the suspect.
About ten Berkeley Police Department vehicles and several UCPD vehicles responded to the scene.
The suspect was not found and no arrests were made as of Saturday afternoon, according to Berkeley police Lt. Rico Rolleri.
The suspect is described as a male, wearing a dark hoodie, 5' 7" with a slender build, according to De La Luna.
