Senior Day for the Cal women's soccer team ended in a dog-pile. Lisa Kevorkian was at the bottom of it.
In the 98th minute, Katie Suits collected the ball on the right side of midfield and floated a cross into the box. Kevorkian met it in traffic with a diving header, placing the ball into the upper-V for the game winner over Arizona State, 3-2.
"I have never been on the bottom of a dog-pile before," Kevorkian said. "It was such a great feeling except I couldn't breathe, but it was so worth it."
The unusually lively and large crowd at Edwards Stadium on Sunday witnessed a wild one between Cal (9-7-1, 3-4-0 in the Pac-10) and the Sun Devils.
ASU (7-6-1, 3-4-0) notched the game's first goal. In the seventh minute, Cal keeper Gina Pellegrini missed a tackle on a 50-50 ball, allowing the Sun Devils' Courtney Tinnin to dribble the last 18 yards by herself and into the goal for an early 1-0 lead.
"We didn't expect to go one down the way we were playing," Bears coach Neil McGuire said. "But I was very proud of how our girls battled back."
Just over a minute later, Alex Morgan broke free down the sideline and beat the keeper across her body for the side-net finish to tie the game at 1-1. In the 16th, Morgan was taken down from behind inside the box for a penalty. Senior Katie Oakes converted the kick from the mark for the 2-1 go-ahead goal.
ASU came out strong after the intermission, as Jill Shoquist nearly netted a curling header to the upper-V in the 49th minute.
Seven minutes later, Alexandra Elston heel-flicked a bouncing ball from Bianca Doller over the top of several Cal defenders and Pelligrini and under the crossbar for the equalizer.
Both sides had chances in the remaining time, but neither could find the mark and the game pushed into overtime, when Kevorkian scored the golden goal.
